Some men have a tendency to clear their throats or look away or grin and get all uncomfortable when you bring up the topic of gender based violence.

This is partly due to the clear and obvious fact that women are globally marginalized and are frequently targets in IPV, particularly by men who deny and justify their abuse, partly because they live in a world of hegemonic masculinity.

I do not like new words in psychology, there are not a lot, I’m wordy in more than one language, but hegemonic got me like homogeneity and sphygmomanometer, they don’t roll off the tongue well at all.

Hegemonic Masculinity.

Hegemonic masculinity is why men's violence against men and women is so high, it’s those old fashioned values of androcentrism and male dominance that are still subtly present in media and the minds of many.
