People with narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) are stuck in a cycle of self-protection, in particular, lying and denying things that they say and do without concern for the people they harm in the process.

The narcissistic need to protect themselves ends up harming others, and ultimately themselves, as they seek to control their immediate environment to accommodate their own needs while neglecting the needs of the people around them.

Lies and secrets kill relationships.

Being pulled up on our mistakes can create all kinds of misery, but for most of us emotional maturity kicks in and we take heed, making sure to correct those mistakes. Narcissists will attack whoever points out their mistakes, becoming so preoccupied with their attack that any opportunity to focus on a solution is washed away in the muddied waters of anger or silent treatment.

Something as simple as, “Hey, my feelings hurt when you call me names,” will end up becoming the narcissist's weapon. The narcissist might stop for a day, but the name-calling will start again and it will get much worse. That sentence alone will end up causing a narcissistic rage which…
