Therapy Alone Can’t Fix Your Shrunken Brain.
Check your diet and lifestyle, too.
Chronic stress and trauma reduces the volume of vital regions of the brain that take care of how you process your thoughts and emotions. Amygdala and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA) activity, responsible for your stress responses, is also altered.
The pathways that allow communication between those regions and how that information is integrated and processed are severely damaged under chronic stress and trauma.
When your body is under less physiological stress, it can function faster and better. A healthy diet and lifestyle supports neural connectivity and metabolism along with structurally and functionally strengthening white and grey matter.
Whole foods are high in antioxidants and low in sugar and unhealthy fats which prevent disease and support healthy brain function.
Exercise, meditation, and getting outdoors, particularly in vast natural areas where the brain has few unnatural distractions, can all increase the volume and integrity of your brain.
So, please do not forget to take care of the physical side of your brain, too.
